Oilseeds
The area of Oilseed Rape grown in Ireland each year is approx. 10,000 hectares, with 80-85% of this area typically sown to winter season varieties. The market is dominated by hybrid types that are capable of delivering high seed yields and good disease resistance. There are also some new conventional bred varieties which can now match the yields of hybrids. Many breeders have introduced yield protecting traits such as pod-shatter resistance, phoma / light leaf spot resistance and Turnip Virus Yellows resistance to their new varieties. These genetic advancements will no doubt help to lift yields further and improve the reliability and consistency of performance of OSR in the field.
High performing hybrid from Dekalb / Monsanto which offers growers an array of yield protecting traits such as superb disease resistance (Phoma, LLS, Canker) and top pod-shatter resistance (as proved in DAFM Trials 2015). Recommended by DAFM. Displays vigorous autumn growth. Produces a large canopy which has good standing power. Early to flower. Remains a very poular variety with Irish growers and looks very well in the fields this year.
High performing hybrid variety from RAGT which is just behind Anastasia on HGCA (North) Rec List for 2017/18. Combines very high seed yield (108%) with very good resistance to LLS (7) and excellent resistance to lodging (8). Earliest variety to flower, thus providing long pod-fill period. Showed up as being one of the cleanest varieties against LLS this season. Candidate variety for DAFM recommendation in 2018
.
Recommended by DAFM in autumn 2017 with a relative yield rating of 100. Also listed on the AHDB (North) Rec List of WOSR varieties for 2017/18 with a relative seed yield of 110. Displays excellent early vigour, ideal for later sowings / challenging drilling conditions. Good lodging resistance, and shows good resistance to LLS (6). A consistent performer, produces a very even canopy.
Conventional-bred variety from Elsoms in the UK introduced to the Irish market by Goldcrop in autumn 2016. Produces very high seed yields (highest yielding conventional variety (103) tested by DAFM in 2017). Short (150cm) with excellent resistance to lodging (8) and stem stiffness (8). The variety is medium-early flowering (7) and is medium maturity (5). It is also good on LLS (6). High oil content (46.8%)
High yielding conventional line known to give reliable performance under Irish conditions. Very good to stand and early to mature. Delivers the highest seed yields on HGCA list for a conventional variety. Good pod-shatter resistance.
