Oilseed

The area of Oilseed Rape grown in Ireland each year is approx. 10,000 hectares,

with 80-85% of this area typically sown to winter season varieties.

The market is dominated by hybrid types that are capable of delivering high seed yields and good disease resistance. There are also some new conventional bred varieties which can now match the yields of hybrids. Many breeders have introduced yield protecting traits such as pod-shatter resistance, phoma / light leaf spot resistance and Turnip Virus Yellows resistance to their new varieties. These genetic advancements will no doubt help to lift yields further and improve the reliability and consistency of performance of OSR in the field.
