While successful overseeding isn’t always guaranteed, it does offer a number of benefits

• Lower establishment costs and full cultivation not required
• Faster turn around time when less lost forage production
• Greater options for weed control
• Red Clover and Chicory offer establishment benefits, while White Clover and Plantain can offer longer term productivity

Tips for Success:

1. Soil test to ensure optimum soil fertility. Ph of 6.5 to 6.9 will benefit legumes
2. Identify a field with a high % of Perennial Ryegrass, most likely recently reseeded. A full reseed would be more beneficial in older swards
3. Check if sward is open and bare ground is available for new seedlings to establish
4. Target warm moist soil conditions
5. Graze tight to remove excess material and expose soil
6.  Use a drill to achieve excellent seed to soil contact
7. Use watery slurry to also improve soil contact
8. Reduce Nitrogen application to suppress Perennial Ryegrass competition, keeping in mind on farm feed demand
9. Graze frequently after seeding, keeping pre grazing herbage mass below 1200 Kg DM/ha to prevent shading
